HOLYWELL

Holywell was one of three UHF relays built in the mid 1990's to provide BBC 1 Wales and S4C to areas on the Welsh side of the river Dee estuary, which otherwise enjoyed good reception of English programming from Winter Hill, but had poor reception offering Welsh programming from Moel-y-Parc. The other two sites were Bagillt and Flint. All three sites closed at DSO in November 2009, being replaced by Storeton (Wales). The original channel allocations were BBC1 - 57, S4C - 67. These were changed to BBC1 - 47, S4C - 51 on 21-Sep-2000 as a consequence of interim DTT equalisation at Winter Hill. The band II panels were added later for Radio Cymru, entering service on 26-Feb-2003. Some BBC documents name this site as Treffynnon. Not quite as much detail as I'd have hoped to have got. It was early evening, I was in a little bit of a rush to get where I was going, and didn't want to enter the farmyard that was adjacent to the mast without permission. Visible are the VHF RX aerial at the top (for Llangollen), four vertically polarised TX dipoles, the RX log periodic for UHF Moel-y-Parc, and at the very top the UHF TX dipoles. |
