Fawley transmitted Channel 5 and local TV service Six TV to Southampton and the surrounding area. The transmitting aerials were located on the chimney of the Fawley Power Station, Southampton, and for most viewers it is more or less in the same direction as the main transmitter for BBC/ITV/C4 at Rowridge. Owing to frequency planning requirements the signals from the site were only directed in a narrow beam northwards. Channel 5 launched on 30-Mar-1997 on ch34 at a maximum ERP of 10kW. Closed on 25-Mar-2009, freeing ch34 for temporary use at Rowridge for the ongoing interim DTT service. Six TV transmitted a local tv service from 21-Oct-2002 to April 2009 on ch29 at a maximum ERP of 4 kW. Six TV had a second transmitter at Millbrook. |

...and Peter Bigwood provided the details |
Above: there were two pairs of panels, possibly to allow for different polar patterns since the lower (red) panels appear to be facing in different directions Below: in August 2015 the upper panels and supporting metalwork have been removed but the lower pair remain - other items previously on the lower framework seem to have been "recovered" however |
