This looked an interesting site to stop off at on the way down to Clarkson's Farm.

Whichford Hill was an intermediate SHF site between Whipsnade and Sutton Coldfield, important in the expansion of Radio 3 in stereo. Whipsnade received Radio 3 off air from Wrotham, passed this up to Whichford Hill which then passed over to Sutton Coldfield. It seems the link from Whichford Hill to Sutton was not without its issues, and looks to have been retired when the link was re-engineered to handle the PCM distribution chain, being replaced by Thorpe Lodge and Meriden. I have no idea on the dates on the start and end of Whichford Hill.

More information on the link can be found in Ray Cooper's excellent Tales from a Cold Field, link at the bottom of the page.

The tower and period buildings still remain, now operated by National Grid. The tower is oriented north west/south east to aim for Sutton Coldfield/Whipsnade.

This site was a short walk away, named Oatley Hill Radio Site on the hut. Going to guess it's for amateur radio. Certainly a good take off from up here.
