MOEL-Y-PARC

Photos by Jack Richardson Page last updated: 2020-02-26

New S2 aerial - February 2020

A nice couple of hours walk around Moel-y-Parc. I’d recommend walking to the top of the hill, by the cairn, for the views over North Wales and the North West. I have seen the mast on a clear night from Blackpool beach, parts of Manchester, Thelwall Viaduct, and from various parts of Liverpool. Winter Hill can also be seen, 43 miles away.

The site is not actually at the top of Moel-y-Parc, set down slightly on the north side of the hill.

The update list called for photos of the new S2 UHF reserve Tx aerial, which was installed for 700 MHz band clearance during the autumn of 2018.

The main (S1) and the new reserve (S2) UHF transmit aerials. The new S2 looks to be a little higher up the mast and the interim DTT panels have been removed.

The new S2 aerial now has 8 tiers of panels. It was 6 tiers before. Not sure what the rectangular unit is above.

[Ed] mb21 has been contacted about the rectangular unit above the S2 aerial which apparently is a liquid filled damper to reduce oscillations of the mast.

All DAB services except Liverpool use these aerials.

Heart's transmit aerials. Since the previous photos, the bottom aerial seems to have been turned somewhat, I imagine to achieve a broader coverage pattern? [Ed] Or it has come loose.

I was impressed by how directional these aerials are. I went walking on nearby Halkyn Mountain, Moel-y-Parc is visible about 5 miles away, yet Silk FM (Sutton Common - about 45 miles away, but line of sight over the Cheshire Plain) was still dominant, with occasional bursts of Heart coming through. The radio had to be facing the mast to get a decent signal. Driving back in the Mold direction (i.e. away from the beam), my car radio was starting to lose the signal on what felt not too far away from the site.

Top left are the aerials for Liverpool DAB, beaming towards Liverpool. Mold local TV logs middle right, and what is perhaps a reserve FM aerial for Heart? It's beaming westwards.

Band II receive Yagis directed towards Wrexham-Rhos. These were probably used for the programme feed for MFM when this service was transmitted from Moel-y-Parc on 97.1 MHz during the 1990's.

From the top of the hill... the Great Orme. You can just about see Anglesey behind and to the left.

Liverpool. St. John's Beacon (Radio City) can be made out centre right.
